While gathering for the final Community Call of 2023, RCC community members reflected on the year and our shared story as a community.

Retreat centers in all geographical regions are facing an increasing number of severe weather events per year, and each event carries the potential for major impacts. By creating business continuity plans and emergency plans, retreat centers are prioritizing disaster preparedness and resilience.

Our annual retreat last week at Five Oaks Centre in Ontario was a four-day celebration of the RCC community. We discussed resilience, racial healing, land stewardship, learning through gaming and play, operations and programming, bringing core values to life, and more. Such a joy to be together!

On this Community Call, we discussed the pain points for retreat center leadership and board—how they’re rising to meet ongoing challenges and embracing intergenerational and intercultural leadership.

On October 11, the Stewardship Circle gathered with community members to share their stories and discuss their vision for the future of the Retreat Center Collaboration.

Retreats always involve movement: Physical, cultural, psychospiritual, and political. Some of the most potent retreat experiences are the ones that bring us to the edge of our comfort zones. From the edges, the margins, we reflect upon who we are and begin to imagine who we might become.

Our legacies include people of great wisdom, champions of justice and with immense fortitude.  People who convened in sweat lodges, hush harbors and retreat centers.  In these places they purified their spirits, nourished their souls, and conditioned their bodies for the battles ahead.  Together we remember how they too helped to build the spiritual foundation for a loving world.
